HKRL have announced that the 2019 HKRL9s will take place on Saturday 4 May at King’s Park. What started as an all domestic affair has grown to see visiting overseas teams compete and win the coveted James Hall trophy. Last year saw Tonga RL Development take the trophy home in a nail biting final against domestic team Pacific Toa who are captained by Hong Kong international Hogan Toomalatai. Previous winners include HKRL 9s crowd favourites, Diamond Chiefs from Papua New Guinea, Mongkok Creepers and South Pacific All Stars.
“This will be our fifth HKRL 9s, each year the standards just get higher and higher and I’m sure 2019 will be no exception”, commented HKRL chairman, Neville Metcalfe who went on to say “After competing in the recent Emerging Nations World Championship, rugby league in Hong Kong is receiving a lot of attention and interest in our 9s is high”.
